Why is a Microscope important in Dentistry?

We get a few people who come into our dental clinic for a Root Canal treatment or Tooth colored Fillings and are surprised that we use a microscope for these procedures because they have undergone these procedures before without them. Well using a Microscope in Dentistry has a number of advantages- the most important being enhanced vision. A root canal opening is so tiny - tinier than a hair follicle! So imagine doing a complete procedure of removing infection, cleaning and filling such a tiny system without clearly seeing it. Not to mention that the process becomes more challenging when you have to deal with saliva, blood and in some lower teeth situations, the tongue in the way. Without magnification, it is very easy to miss several anatomic structures too. All teeth are different and hence the anatomy varies from tooth-to-tooth even in the same person. If you miss cleaning the root canal or miss anatomy- you are setting the treatment up for long term failure.

The same goes for fillings done without magnification- you will miss removing decay completely, miss the little drop of saliva that can sneak past the rubber dam and compromise your treatment. Sure all these treatments have been done without magnification in the past and will sadly continue to be done- but when you know your treatment is compromised, it is unfair to the patient who is not receiving the best possible care. Remember- if you don't see it, you don't treat it!
