I HATE dentists!- Top 5 reasons why people dread a dental visit

"I HATE DENTISTS!"- We cannot tell you how many times people have sat in our dental chair and said that to our doctors before they even have a chance to say hello. Initially we thought we weren't making a good first impression but over time we realized it was more a generalized feeling and we didn't take it so personally anymore. So what makes this group so hated? After speaking to a lot of people and doing our own research, some of the reasons why people hated the dentist was surprising. We assumed it was because they had a horrible previous dentist experience but boy! We were far from the top 5 reasons why people do!

Reason #1- People hate the 'idea' of a dentist rather than the person itself. It's definitely not a nice feeling when someone is poking around in your mouth- especially when you're in pain or cannot even keep your mouth open wide enough. Trust us when we say that your dentist does not want you to feel uncomfortable in any way and is doing their best to give you the best possible care.

Reason #2- the sound of the dental 'drill' or 'dentist office smell'. This one was a surprise! At Summit Dental Clinic, we understand that you want to block out all the noise and feelings associated with a hospital. Our dental team provides noise cancellation earphones as well as we can play your choice in music. Also who doesn't love the smell of lavender or vanilla when you walk into an office? We do our best to make sure our dental clinic smells good. ps- White tea vanilla is our favorite. ( we had a cinnamon diffuser for a while but it made Dr. Shivani hungry all the time)

Reason #3- People talk. Another reason why people avoid coming into the dentist is because their family and friends scare them enough. That again could be due to a variety of reasons ranging from someone else who scared them or sometimes unfortunately they have had a genuinely bad experience. We see this all the time with parents who scare their kids before they even step foot into a dental center (thanks for that parents!).

Reason #4- Scared about the possibility of pain. This one we understand but when you avoid the dentist for so long that finally when you walk in at a stage where even the most conservative dentist cannot help but advise that you pull a tooth out and replace it with a dental implant- you only have yourself to blame. At Summit Dental, pulling out a tooth is considered a crime, but sometimes that is the only option remaining. As with any surgical procedure, discomfort is expected but the good news is that its not permanent.

Reason #5- Think the dentist is over-expensive. Sadly for dental healthcare professionals, we live in a country and especially in a city like Bangalore where there are dental clinics at every corner (differing in cleanliness and expertise). It is sad that people go 'dentist shopping' and bargain with dentists who have spent easily a decade of their life honing their skills. So next time you think a dentist is expensive- look around- is their clinic following the correct sterilization protocol? Do the doctors seem competent? Are they using latest technology? And more importantly- Do you feel comfortable? If it is yes, then you cannot put a price on your health.
